Vinayaka Chaturthi 2021

By Navistha Vashist - June 13, 2021

Introduction:-

Vinayaka Chaturthi is a very auspicious and promising occasion for Hindus. Like all other festivals celebrated in India, Vinayaka Chaturthi is also celebrated on different dates every year. In 2020, Vinayak Chaturthi was celebrated on 22nd August and in 2021, it is 13th June. Vinayaka Chaturthi is also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chavithi and Ganeshotsav. This festival drops on the 4th day of Shukla Paksha in Bhaadrapada (according to the Hindu calendar Bhaadrapada is the sixth month and as per the Gregorian calendar, it features the month August- September.) The literal meaning of Vinayaka Chaturthi is asking God to fulfil any desire one has. Each lunar month has two Chaturthi Tithis. It is believed that both the Chaturthi Tithi belongs to Lord Ganesha. The Chaturthi after Amavasya or new moon during Shukla Paksha is known as Vinayaka Chaturthi.

Why is Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrated?

Lord Ganesha is god of wisdom, good luck, auspiciousness, he is the dealer of problems and obstacles, wealth and health. Lord Ganesha is the child of Lord Shiva (God of Destruction, Meditation, Yoga, Time and Dance; The Destroyer of Evil) and Goddess Parvati (Goddess of Power, Energy, Devotion, Marriage, Motherhood, Children, Fertility, Love, and Harmony).

This day highlights the monthly birthday of lord Ganesha. This is a very auspicious day as good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or the start of travel.

Birth of Lord Ganesha:-

Once upon a time, Goddess Parvati was at her home on Kailash parvat preparing for a bath. As she didn’t wanted to be disturbed, she told Nandi (Lord Shiva’s Bull), to guard the door and let no one pass at any cost. Nandi faithfully accepted. But, when Lord Shiva came home and naturally wanted to come inside, Nandi had to let him pass, being loyal to Lord Shiva primitively. Goddess Parvati was angry, but the fact was that she had no one as loyal to herself as Nandi was to Lord Shiva. So, she took the turmeric paste from her body and breathing life into it, she created Lord Ganesha, announced him to be her own loyal son.

The next time Parvati wished to bathe, she posted Lord Ganesha on guard duty at the door. In this time Lord Shiva came home, he saw an unknown & strange boy telling him he couldn’t enter his own house. Furious, Shiva ordered his army to kill the boy, but they all failed! Such power did Lord Ganesha possess, being the son of Devi herself!

This surprised Lord Shiva. Seeing that this wasn't an ordinary boy, the usually peaceful Lord Shiva decided he would have to fight him, and in his divine fury severed Ganesha’s head, killing him instantly. When Parvati learned of this, she was so enraged and insulted that she decided to destroy the entire creation! Lord Brahma, being the Creator, naturally had his issues with this, and pleaded that she reconsider her drastic plan. She said she would, but only if two conditions were met: 1. Ganesha to be brought back to life, and 2. that he be would be worshipped before any god and forever.

Shiva cooled down by this time, and realizing his mistake, agreed to Parvati’s conditions. He sent Brahma out with orders to bring back the head of the first creature he crosses that is laying with its head facing North. Brahma soon returned with the head of a strong and powerful elephant, which Shiva placed onto Ganesha’s body. Breathing new life into him, he declared Ganesha to be his own son as well and grants him the status of being foremost among the gods, and leader of all the ganas (classes of beings), Ganapati.

Ganapati wrote the Epic Mahabharata:-

Ganesha wrote the Mahabharata, as it was recited to him by sage Vyasa (Veda Vyasa). It was done on the condition that Vyasa would not stop while reciting the epic and that Ganesha would not stop while writing, besides the condition that Ganesha would not merely write it, but also understand every verse of it. Popular legends say that it took both of them three years of continuous speaking and writing to complete the epic.
